No, I was put off by the negative reviews. I've got KotOR installed, actually, and just started a game recently. Let me know how Mass Effect compares in the end.
Yeah, turns out it's not so hot. KotOR only has a few locales, but they're varied and have lots of side quests. To make Mass Effect seem more massive, the developers made dozens of planets to visit. Each is less well fleshed out than the KotOR planets (some consist of vast empty environments with only one or two buidings (often with identical interiors)). There are four or five main plot planets, but they're less immersive because the game's side quests are spread out over the galaxy map.
The much-hyped speech system isn't so great, either.
Oh, well. So it goes. Go play KotOR. You might be less forgiving of the campy Star Wars plot than fans like me, but the gameplay is solid.

Did you ever play Mass Effect? I'm trying it out now and so far it seems okay. Very much like KotOR.
